Island Volunteer Caregivers (IVC)
Island Volunteer Caregivers works within community to support life-enriching connections between caring people and the elderly and persons with disabilities to enable their independence, dignity, health and well-being.
Elizabeth had been a dedicated IVC volunteer for many years but suddenly found herself in the position of needing to be on the receiving end of services, due to changes in her health and vision. She had always been very independent and was reluctant to ask for anything, but with her family’s encouragement, she finally did. Since that time, volunteers have driven her to medical and physical therapy appointments, to the Low Vision Support Group meetings, on outings for companionship, enjoyment and to reduce social isolation, provided a medical note taker to accompany her to appointments, and so much more. One day she commented: “I don’t know why I waited so long to call; this has been such an amazing service!”
Kitsap Great Give funding will allow us to meet the ever increasing requests for services we are experiencing, to allow people to age in place. It will help us to recruit, train and retain more volunteers and deepen our program offerings.
